Basic rations and coffee must go hand in hand, and with that come rituals about how it is prepared and consumed in garrison, in the field, and in times of war. The history of coffee is believed to date back to the 10th century. It's a long time for soldiers to drink beer and kick ass.

The company's founder and CEO, Matt Phillips (whose father was a WWII sailor), started in the coffee business in 1979 as a member of the New York Green Coffee Association. During his 35 years in business, he lived in Brazil and worked as a sales manager for Brazil's largest green bean exporter, Tristao Trading in New York. Matt left Tristao in 1989 to become president and CEO of Branco Peres, another agricultural group and Brazilian coffee exporter located on Long Island. During this time, he had the opportunity to become involved in supporting the US Marine Corps Recruiting Command's First Zone, also based on Long Island. Many personal friendships were formed during this time, friendships that endure today.
Unfortunately, Matt was unable to serve in uniform as he had his eye removed at a very young age due to an injury. But after retiring from coffee in 2005, Matt wanted to make a more direct contribution in terms of supporting our military and volunteered to deploy to Iraq as part of the OIF Logistics Support Mission LOGCAP. Matt was deployed to Iraq in 2008 and deployed to FOB Warrior/Kirkuk, Iraq to support our combatants on the front lines of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was this experience of being able to see firsthand what loyal men we have to protect our nation - in all branches of our military - that led to this idea that led to the Java Army Group.
The Military Java Group is the culmination of a desire to take 35 years of experience in the coffee industry and turn it into something that can change the lives of our young men and women who have given so much to the service and sacrificed to this great nation. Coffee has held a special place in American military tradition since the Civil War and continues to be a part of military life to this day. Fred Fusco Fred is a 20 year veteran of the Army Special Operations Command and owner of Storm Tactical Consulting, Fred served as a Special Forces medic for several years before trying out and being selected to serve as a unit of measurement for special mission operators. During his long career, Fred served as a raider, breaker, medic, sniper, human intelligence specialist and finally as a dog handler. Fred's Story 20 years of service as a medic with 18 Delta Green Berets and later as an operator in the Army's Special Missions Division.
